I am on my way back from Hailuoto, an island
off the coast west of Oulu. I am on a coach,
on a ferry, on the sea. And this man has got
out of his car for a stroll along the deck with
his daughter, who can only just be glimpsed to
his left. I remember thinking how low in the
sea we were. That the water felt too close for
comfort. How cold and grey and forbidding
the sea appeared to be.To fall in would be
fatal. When I look at this picture I wonder
whether this man was trying - by way of
warning - to describe to his beloved child the
perils of the sea. And then there's the rail:
between us and oblivion, six inches of steel.
